To Replace or Not to Replace
Posted on May 29, 2012 by Dr. Meadows |
In the United States there are two options for breast implants, Saline or Silicone. A Saline Implant is filled with a sterile saltwater solution and has a flexible fill volume. The Silicone Implant has a set fill volume of cohesive gel. Each implant has different profiles or shapes to allow the most natural appearance for your figure. At Meadows Surgical Arts we use Mentor Breast Implants. Mentor was the first breast implant manufacturer in the industry to offer a patient Limited Warranty on breast implants. Implant rupture is very rare with the current models of breast implants. (3-5% for saline, 1.1% for silicone gel) Due to this risk of rupture and the risk of capsular contracture, patients are counseled that additional procedures may be necessary lifelong but there is currently no recommendation by the FDA or the manufacturer for replacement at 10 years.
