Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the male breasts.  It may present as fatty deposits due to weight gain, an imbalance of hormones causing the male breast tissue to enlarge, or a combination of both.  It may also be present on just one side of the chest, or on both sides.  While not a serious medical issue, the presence of "male breasts" or "man boobs" can be highly embarrassing, especially for teen boys or young men.  

 

About two-thirds of boys will experience some growth of the breast tissue during their teen years, but that normally subsides by the time the boy reaches the age of seventeen.  If the condition is not resolved by then, self-esteem issues may take root, and the condition may become all-consuming.
